Within the last quarter of last year 2016, KNUST recorded a whopping 50% crime rate reduction according to Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, the Vice Chancellor. This achievement is attributed to the effective security strategies and policies that are still currently in place to make campus a safer place to be.
The Vice Chancellor hinted on the new KNUST initiative to install CCTV cameras around campus last year. True to his word, progress has been made as cameras have been installed at the various hall entrances. This was done during the first week of reopening this semester. Every porter’s lodge in every hall will be fitted with a television screen to monitor all activities in the hall.
It must be noted however that these cameras are not in operation yet and the televisions have not been brought in. As to the exact period the installation of the cameras will be extended to other nooks and crannies of the individual halls and to the various faculties and colleges, no one, apart from the authorities, knows. Nevertheless, we appreciate the efforts being made to follow through with the implementation of this policy. At least, after they are completed and in operation, some people will have the opportunity to appear on TV (laughing emoji inserted).
We also implore the authorities to consider extending this much attention to security towards off-campus hostels and homestels which are at even more risk of crime-related activities. Every student matters and must be catered for.
